LAKE COUNTY If you enjoy antique cars, beautiful scenery and making new friends, the Lake County Model A Club has an event for you.
The group s Spring Opener will be held May 5-7 at Konocti Vista Casino, Marina and Resort.
Bert Isley, one of the club s leaders, said approximately 80 Model As and 180 participants from around the state, as well as Nevada and Oregon, are expected to take place in this year s opener, which has attracted an increasingly larger following over the past few years.
Registration begins after noon on Friday, May 5 at the resort. That same day, a poker run is scheduled for 4 p.m. and a casual barbecue at 6 p.m. The Konocti Fiddle Club will entertain that evening.
On Saturday, May 6, the group will take a tour through Lakeport, Scotts Valley and through to Upper Lake, where they ll tour local antique shops and the newly reestablished Blue Wing Saloon and Cafe. From there, it s on to Elk Mountain Road and the campgrounds for lunch before returning to Konocti Vista.
Following the tour on Saturday, there will be a swap meet at Konocti Vista and trophies for President s Choice, Gentlemen s Choice and Ladies Choice, and a special hard luck award, usually for a lost driver or someone who suffered mechanical problems.
That evening, the group will hold a banquet at the resort, with entertainment provided by the Vintage Singers.
The opener wraps up on Sunday, with a full breakfast, farewells and a final tour on Butts Canyon Road in Middletown.
The Spring Opener never fails to entertain. It provides the rare treat of getting up close to beautifully restored antique cars. On tour day, watching the cars process along the county s scenic roads is a wonderful sight.
