From staff reports

ST. HELENA A faulty electrical splice was the cause of the 2004 Geysers Fire, which burned more than 12,000 acres in Lake and Sonoma counties and cost $14 million to suppress.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection released the results of its investigation Wednesday. The press release stated the faulty splice was in an electrical circuit that provided power to steam line equipment, owned by Calpine Corporation, in The Geysers area. The resulting arc caused molten metal to fall onto dry grass, causing the blaze. The CDF said the fire caused an undetermined dollar amount of damage to private property.

A copy of the report will be available for viewing beginning Monday at CDF s Sonoma-Lake-Napa headquarters, 1199 Big Tree Road. Anyone wishing to view the report, or obtain a copy, should call the CDF at 967-1400 to make arrangements.
