Maybe now would be a really good time for Caltrans to make trucks use the southern route around the lake instead of Highway 20. For the past few weeks, part of Highway 20 between Lucerne and Glenhaven has been sliding into the lake. About as quickly as Caltrans crews add rock and asphalt, the highway slips further toward the lake.
It does not take a highway engineer to tell that the big trucks are far more the cause of the problem than smaller, lighter vehicles. As opposed to lighter vehicles you can feel the big rigs shake the earth as they pass.
Since the Regional Transportation Plan calls for the diversion of the heavy through traffic to get off of Highway 20 between Clearlake Oaks and Upper Lake; since the trucks pose a danger to the environment when they repeatedly tip over into the lake when negotiating turns on Highway 20; and since they cause problems for drivers and pedestrians as they pass through our north shore communities, maybe it is time to send the trucks the other way.
How about it, Caltrans? Help our towns, our environment and our highway.
