LAKE COUNTY Two local students recently were honored for their artistic talents in a statewide content to draw attention to child abuse prevention.
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and to mark the occasion the state s Prevent Child Abuse Center hosted its second annual Heroes for Kids art contest at the State Capitol on Kids Day at the Capitol on April 7.
The contest asks children to draw posters encouraging healthy habits including good eating, bike safety, saying no to drugs, exercise, eating dinner together and more. The contest winner is honored with having his or her art displayed as part of Kids Day at the Capitol.
Marilyn Guenther s second and third grade classes at Lakeport Elementary participated in last year s contest, with art teacher Pat Hopper assisting. Second grader Janet Cortez won first place in the K-3 categories for her poster on preventing child abuse.
This year Guenther s classes again were among hundreds to participate, yet their winning ways continued when second grader Terra Morin won first place in the K-3 categories for her poster on eating dinner together. Besides having her art on display April 7, Terra also received a $100 gift certificate to Target.
Last year s winner, Janet Cortez, wasn t able to attend her award ceremony. But this year, with the help of Terra s family and the school, Janet was able to go and receive her award.
