UPPER LAKE — In a battle of North Central League I South baseball teams looking for their first win, the Clear Lake Cardinals beat the Upper Lake Cougars 16-2 on Monday afternoon in Upper Lake.
Winning pitcher Nate Velez worked five scoreless innings for the victory, allowing only one hit, and also went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Also with three hits for Clear Lake (1-3 South, 2-7 overall) was Freddy Olloqui, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and six RBIs. The home run for Olloqui, who reached base in all six of his plate appearances, was a two-run blast to straightaway center field in the sixth inning.
Clear Lake”s Ricky Wood went 2-for-6 with an RBI.
Kieron McCarthy went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Cougars (0-4 South, 2-11), who scored twice in the bottom of the seventh.
