Many years ago there was a TV show called ?The Twilight Zone.? It was a science fiction show known for its plot twists.
One show has two well-dressed men delivering a box with a black button to a woman. They told her that if she pressed this black button someone she didn?t know would die but in return she would be paid a lot of money. She agonized over this decision and finally decided to press the button.
As promised the men delivered a suitcase full of money and took the box. The woman asked, ?Where are you taking the box?? The men answered: ?To someone you don?t know.? This gives you the impression that her life would be taken next.
I believe our society has decided to push that black button. We are allowing abortion for women who are not ready for a baby. We are in essence saying that a baby?s life should end for a greater good.
The Chinese have taken this argument to the next step. For the greater good they have decided to curb their population by limiting women to one child. Abortion is mandated by the state for additional children and words like a ?woman?s right to choose? are irrelevant.
The problem comes for you and I when we have retired and are not as productive as we once were and our government can?t afford the entitlements promised us, like Social Security and Medicare. So for the greater good of society, we should exercise our ?right to die.? This is currently happening in the Netherlands and older people feel intense pressure to end their life prematurely.
If we believe some life is expendable for the greater good then we have to assume that ?some life? will eventually be our life and someone we don?t know will push that black button on our behalf.
