LAKEPORT — The Northern California Racing Association held its second points race of the season on Saturday night at the Lakeport Speedway, where several new faces visited the winner?s circle.
While the street stock division continues to struggle with its numbers ? only four cars participated — the four waged quite a battle and it was Charlie Collins of Lucerne setting the fast time (13.822 seconds) and going on to win the main event.
In other action:
— Robert Schmidt of Lucerne had a near clean sweep in the mini-stock division, winning the trophy dash, heat race and 30-lap feature. Mitch Preston stopped him from winning everything as Preston set the fast time at 13.935.
— Kenny Grinols of Kelseyville was first across the line in the 30-lap Guy Strohmeier Auto Center bomber division main event, however Grinol?s car had previously been determined as not legal and he was running just for fun, so the win went to second-place finisher George Abella of Lakeport.
Grinols and Abella both broke the bomber track record earlier in time trials, but both then lost the record when their cars did not pass a technical inspection. Abella fixed his car before the feature but Grinols could not. Jimmy Sorrels did pass a technical inspection after breaking his own record of 15.402 with a 15.376-second lap.
— George Lovrin of Upper Lake, the newest driver in the L.A. Cruiser division, won both the trophy dash and the main event in only his second outing at Lakeport. Cruiser champ Paul Lauenroth won the 10-lap heat race.
— Pat Ariaz of Manteca took the lead on the first turn of the first lap in the NMCA sprint car feature and never looked back, winning the 30-lap race, his second win at Lakeport. Michael Zarevish of Manteca set the fast time (12.735).
— Mark Baldwin of Fortuna beat Dave Anderson and Ron Rosenthal in a five-car, 20-lap exhibition event for the Thunder Roadsters, who were at Lakeport to test gears prior to their points race at Lakeport on July 29.
Racing resumes Saturday night with the 15th annual Founder?s Cup race, which will include the Northern California Racing Association modifieds. The inaugural ?Cub Scout 500? will also take place between the Kelseyville and Lakeport Cub Scout packs.
