LAKEPORT ? The Lake County Board of Supervisors began initial discussions this week to propose an ordinance requiring that medicinal marijuana not be grown outdoors in areas zoned residential.

District 3 Supervisor Gary Lewis brought the item to the board after a constituent came in complaining about a large “grow” next door to her home in Lucerne.

Board Chair Anthony Farrington told the board that Sheriff Rod Mitchell asked that no action be taken on this proposal until the county counsel and the Lake County Sheriff”s Office had time to research the legalities of the issue.

“We need to make sure we”re on firm ground if we take any action,” Lewis said.

He added, “We”d like to see a restriction on how it”s grown … out of sight, out of mind.”

Lewis would like to discuss modeling an ordinance similar to what Ukiah and Willits have in place ? which require marijuana to be grown indoors or in an enclosure ? in residential areas.

County Counsel Anita Grant reported that Mendocino County cities have ordinances in place “on the basis of nuisance.”

The item was continued to an unspecified time in the future to allow for the sheriff”s request to conduct more research on the matter.
