Mind the flag. VFW advises that on Memorial Day all U.S. flags should be displayed at half-staff during the morning hours, and should be raised back to full-staff at noon.
Buy a “buddy poppy” from a VFW member. You”re likely to see veterans around the county in the next few days with handmade artificial poppies. Sales go to support veterans in need.
Read “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae, a lieutenant colonel in the Canadian Army who served during World War I. His famous poem is the basis for the buddy poppy.
Remember loved ones who served. Is there a family story about a great-great-grandfather who fought during the Civil War? Did your grandfather storm Omaha Beach during World War II? Was your dad a soldier in Vietnam? Tell families stories to keep their memories ? and deeds ? alive.
Attend a memorial service. There are several this weekend. (See calendar.)
