From staff reports
LAKE COUNTY ? Lake County once again plans to celebrate Memorial Day weekend in a big way.
But, amidst all the springtime fun and activities, it”s easy to forget just how Memorial Day got started, and why.
Historical accounts relate that Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day, because it was a time of decorating the graves of Civil War soldier. Americans first observed the holiday on May 30, 1868. To this day, nine Southern states hold Confederate Memorial Day observances on dates in January, April, May and June.
According to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, “By honoring the nation”s war dead, we preserve their memory and thus their service and sacrifice.”
Congress made Memorial Day a national holiday in 1971.
