The inaugural “Cub Scout 500” saw 10 scouts from the Kelseyville Troop No. 145 run in two heat races Saturday night, May 13 during the auto racing program at the Lakeport Speedway. The 10 contestants first participated in a “Best Appearing” car contest where the race fans chose the No. 47 of Jason Osbourne as the winner. The group was divided into age groups with the older boys running first in their home-made race cars. The events featured five-lap races where there were two pit stops 9 the first to fuel up and wash their wind shields, and the second to change rubber (shoes). Heat one saw Travis Woodland the winner over Josh Kupas, David Robinson and Jordan Time. Heat two featured the “Tigers,” scouts in the first and second grades. Josh Jones was the winner in that race with Louis Lopez second. The other competitors were Julius Nelson, Carl Andre, Jason Osbourne and Joshua Osbourne. Plans are already in the making with troop leader Donna Nelson for the second annual event. Editor”s Note: Nadine Strauss is the promotional director and track manager at Lakeport Speedway.
