Delbert Duane “Del Walker” Owens passed away May 30, 2006, at his Lucerne home after a three-year battle with cancer.
He was born in Wellfleet, NE, on Nov. 30, 1938. He moved to California in 1960. Del worked as an accounting manager in various feed lots in Southern California prior to moving to Redwood Valley and accepting a position as dispatcher for the California Highway Patrol, from which he retired July 30, 2000, after 16 years of service.
He was an avid team roper for years in Southern California and won various awards in the sport. He loved horses and country music. He started singing in 1995 and performed locally as well as in Laughlin, Nev., at the River Palms Casino.
His big grin will be remembered by his wife Alice “Ally” Owens; son, Brian Duane (Sveta) Owens; daughters, Kathryn Dianne Winslow, Patti Ruth (Mark) Cole and stepdaughters, Sylvia Kaye (J.R.) Lancaster, and Cyndi Anne Moss; and stepson Daniel Lee Stanton. He also left behind two grandchildren, Michael and Amanda Cole; four step-grandchildren, Justin Lancaster, Vanessa Arslanian, Darrin Dailey and Melissa Dailey; two step great-grandchildren; sister Janice (Robert) Breinig of Holdrege, NE; brother, Eugene (Barbara) Owens of Tahlequah, Okla.; stepfather, Loren C. Baxter of Holdrege, NE.; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and aunts.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman Owens and Veda Baxter.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 3 at Chapel of the Lakes Mortuary, 1625 High St., Lakeport.
