Two distinct points of view can be seen in the matter of Indian names for sports teams. Perhaps our Indian friends would prefer to use their names for something more toward their traditional beliefs regarding ethnic, spiritual and environmental interests.
Games are great fun, but to raise the roof of the gym with cheers for a score made by our team and to do the same for failed efforts or errors of the opposition may not be a desirable attitude.
It seems reasonable for the board to support the Indians” desire for the use of their name, whatever their reason.
Probably few of us would be happy about having our names used for a purpose not of our choosing. That the board voted its principals in this matter seems admirable to me.
As a former board member, I notice efforts of a board to maintain existing facilities as well as possible, given an adequate budget. Development of additional buildings when possible is also important. The new building is not only beautiful to see, but seems to be in constant use, which shows it was badly needed.
The present Kelseyville School Board seems to me to have done well in both efforts and even though there may have been something not everyone may agree with in the system, these people have given freely of their time and effort, more than you know. It seems to me that they have done very well for us.
