Esther M. Allen, a longtime resident of Lake County, died quietly in her sleep on June 8, 2006, at the home of her son, Robert Dahneke.
Esther was born Nov. 23 1921 in Glen Haven, Wisc. She was delivered by her grandfather, who was the local doctor. Esther, the daughter of a teacher, was an excellent student and always enjoyed extracurricular activities.
She and her husband, Jim Allen, a general engineering contractor, owned Three Rivers Company, Inc. in Lower Lake and worked on many local projects. Esther was a very active member and officer in many local civic organizations throughout the years. She was president and held various other offices in the Emblem Club, the Park Study Club and the Lower Lake Civic Club.
She played bridge, loved watching baseball and was an avid outdoorswoman, who enjoyed fishing and hunting. She was a member of the Lower Lake United Methodist Church. She liked keeping up to date on politics and once ran for Lake County supervisor.
She always had a smile and a bit of conversation for everyone, which made her a great columnist for the Clear Lake Observer, where she wrote a weekly column named “Lower Lake Lore” for many years. Her outgoing personality and leadership skills made her an outstanding citizen of Lake County and she will fondly be remembered by family and friends.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 19 at Lower Lake United Methodist Church, 16255 Second St. in Lower Lake, with refreshments served afterward. Instead of flowers, a donation can be made to the American Heart Association in Esther”s name. She will be missed.
