UPDATED:

My husband and I recently found out that a bicycle was stolen from a 12-year-old boy who resides at the homeless shelter in Clearlake.

With the help of Georgina Lehne, the executive director of Lake County Community Action Agency, we decided to surprise the young man by purchasing a replacement bicycle.

Will Bacon, a manager at the Clearlake Wal-Mart, listened to me carefully when I explained why we were buying the bicycle. He immediately offered to donate the bicycle. We appreciated his offer so much that we insisted on paying half the price. When we delivered the bike, the joy and surprise in the eyes of that 12-year-old boy brought tears to my eyes.

In the future, when I hear negative comments about Wal-Mart, I will remember the act of kindness by the manager of our local store. I will also remember that whatever the downside of the Wal-Mart organization may be, this man contributed to our sense of community with his kindness, charity and generosity.
