with your children

In support of today”s letter (June 10)from Darrell Watkins regarding child abuse, his comment that “17 year olds don”t become convicts overnight” is painfully true. Lake County is not unique in that regard countrywide, the problem is frightening.

Having worked for several years in elementary schools with K-3 graders, I see the lack of parental concern or participation with many children even at that level. As problems worsen over the years, these children often have little or no positive influences to sustain them in their lives. Witness the low percentage of children who even attend one school long enough to form some lasting friendships. Sadly the parents and possibly grandparents of these children often suffered similar trauma in their early lives and, thus, have little to offer as role models.

Let us all work toward ending this cycle now and it doesn”t mean a return to the woodshed behind the principal”s office, but becoming involved with the children within your scope.

Volunteer at your nearest school and community events focused on children; use your own skills and life experiences to enrich the upcoming generation. Don”t wait for another headline tragedy to occur, while thinking that “someone has to do something about these kids.”
