LAKEPORT — Certain areas of the city will soon notice changes to posted speed limits, thanks to a decision earlier this month by the city council.
Ordinance No. 854, which updates speed limits in the City of Lakeport, went into effect June 6, said City Engineer Scott Harter.
The new speed limit signs are not yet posted, Harter added, but will be by the end of the summer.
The speed limit increases and decreases are just one component of a speed zone study, he explained.
“Accident analysis, the number of driveways, the density of houses along the roadway, and whether the area is residential or commercial are included in the study, and changes are then made to reflect the speed at which people should be driving,” said Harter.
Of the 30 road segments surveyed in the speed study there are 15 speed zones which increased by 5 miles per hour.
One area on Parallel Drive decreased from 35 to 30 miles per hour.
The speed zone study was conducted with standard engineering practices in January and must be done every five years by law in order for law enforcement to enforce the speed laws, said Harter.
