EUREKA — Derek Thorn of Lakeport cruised to the checkered flag during the second half of the North State Challenge Series doubleheader on Saturday night at the Redwood Acres Raceway in Eureka.

C.J. Badwen came in second, his best finish of the year, and Mike Doss of Ukiah, who won on Friday night, came in third.

Darrell Midgley posted the fast time for the second night in a row, clocking in at 15.604, which beat out Thorn”s 15.628.

Junior Roddy won the dash.

In the main event, Thorn took advantage of a spin involving Roddy and Luke Hall to take over the lead. When Roddy and Hall were sent to the back of the pack, Thorn pushed to the front on the lap-50 restart. He maintained his lead over the final 25 laps.

“That was a lot of fun,” Thorn said of his win. “I”ve really got to hand it to those two guys (Hall and Roddy). They were faster than I was and I couldn”t catch them. But the fastest cars don”t always win. I was in the right place at the right time and I”m real happy to get a win.”

“Our car was great,” said Roddy. “We were set up for long runs and it worked for us tonight. I can”t believe Luke spun. I just barely touched him. Well, we had fun and the car”s in one piece.”

Hall”s crew chief, Preston O”Dell, added, “Every race something happens. I hate getting spun out of the lead, but we”ve struggled with the car lately and we really had it working good tonight, so we”re happy about that.”

Thorn finished fourth during Friday”s action. The racing doubleheader was part of the annual Redwood Acres Fair.
