LAKEPORT The Westshore Little League All-Star majors softball team beat Willits 10-4 on Monday night to win the District 35 Championship at Pickle Field in Lakeport.
It”s the first time Westshore has won the title. The team now advances to the Section I Tournament in Martinez, with first-round action set for Friday.
Chelsea Schultz went the distance on the mound for Westshore, scattering six hits, striking out nine and walking four. Schultz also helped her own cause by smacking an inside-the-park home run.
The game was well-played by both sides as each team committed only one error.
Win or lose on Friday, the Westshore All-Stars return to action Saturday at 10 a.m.
In early-round action during the double-elimination tournament, South-shore defeated Willits 38-8 in four innings last Friday. Winning pitcher Jordan Isaacs worked all four innings and struck out two.
Isabelle Azbill hit a long home run to power Southshore, which also had two triples.
In the other first-round game, played on Saturday, Westshore beat Southshore 15-3 behind the strong pitching of Katherine Edmonds, who worked all four innings. Edmonds tossed a two-hitter, struck out seven and walked only four.
Edmonds also went 3-for-4 at the plate, while teammate Amber McQueen went 2-for-4 with two doubles.
Other Westshore hitting leaders were Brianna Carter, who tripled, and Dominque Carter, who doubled. Every Westshore played scored at least once.
In an elimination game on Sunday, Willits avenged its earlier lopsided loss to Southshore with a 31-15 win in five innings.
Willits pounded out 30 hits, including an inside-the-park home run by Stephanie Duran.
