Local family wants to do something about cancer
Our family has personally been affected by cancer and we want to do something about it. The American Cancer Society has contributed to almost every major discovery in cancer research. Millions of lives have been saved as a result, including people you may know. For those people and countless others, the research the Society has funded is resulting in better ways to prevent, detect, and treat cancer.
On Saturday, July 15, the Valdovinos family is sponsoring a golf tournament for the American Cancer Society. The golf tournament event will be held at the Hidden Valley Lake Country Club in Lake County. Registration is at 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. with continental breakfast, 8 a.m. shotgun and lunch with silent auction at 1 p.m.
The tournament is open to the public and Hidden Valley Lake residents. The fee is $75 and includes cart for the public, $62.50 for property owners (includes cart) and $40 for members.
We are soliciting donations for the charity event. The event will include a raffle, silent auction, tee prizes, food and beverages. Anything that you feel is applicable to donate to this event would be greatly appreciated. The committee is also looking for sponsors of golf holes. If you are unable to donate an item listed above, we would love to add you to our sponsor list for a minimum of $100.
If you have any questions, please contact Julia Valdovinos, committee chair, at 987-0919 or Alison Urmson, manager of community development, American Cancer Society, at 545-6728, ext. 13.
Our family will not stop raising funds until a cure for cancer is found.

What is happening to the Observer*American?
What is happening to the Observer*American? Are “higher ups” trying to get rid of it so the Record-Bee will be the only Lake County newspaper? Two days a week was fine, especially the Saturday copy. Now it is only one day a week on Wednesday. I have enjoyed reading the Observer*American for many years. It had all the news I wanted to read. There is no Spotlight with the TV info now and today there is no info about the Konocti programs! When I called recently, they said “It”s in the Saturday Record-Bee.” No, I won”t buy the Record-Bee! Anyone else feel the same way?

NPR and PBS funding cuts are an attack on our free press
President Bush is pushing to slash NPR and PBS funding — and eliminate funding entirely in two years. In just a week, more than 1.5 million Americans have asked Congress to oppose this move.
Under pressure, Congress restored some funding for this year, but House Republicans just voted to eliminate all funding in two years.
Unbelievably, the cuts start by terminating support for commercial-free children”s shows like “Sesame Street,” “Clifford” and “Maya and Miguel.”
Americans trust public broadcasting more than any other news source. This is an ideological attack on our free press.

Is this a once in a lifetime, or is it a common occurance?
This morning I watched a doe stand stock still while a Blue Jay perched on her head picking bugs out of her coat and her ears. I never have seen this before. Is this a natural thing not often seen or noted, or was it an amazing, unique occurrence? This event went on for some minutes. Anyone know more about deer and jays” habits of mutual assistance?
