COBB MOUNTAIN — Doug Quinones of Hidden Valley Lake captured the 13th annual Lake County Junior Amateur Golf Championship on Wednesday at Adams Springs Golf Course on Cobb Mountain.

Coming off a win Tuesday in the Buckingham Summer Junior, Quinones carded an 8-over-par 76 to win by three shots. He found himself in a tightly contested battle with Nick Schaefer of Kelseyville both golfers were tied with 39 through nine holes.

After 12 holes, Quinones held a slim one-shot lead over Schaefer. But on the par-3 13th hole, Quinones pulled away, chipping in for a birdie-two as Schaefer bogeyed the hole. The two golfers matched each other over the final five holes.

A soon-to-be junior at Middletown High School, Quinones shot a back-nine 37 for a 76 total. Schaefer, an incoming sophomore at Kelseyville High, finished with 79.

Quinones and Schaefer were both entered in the 14-15 boys” age division. Hip Perez of Kelseyville came in third with 94 and Sean Sweeney of Sonoma was fourth with 98.

In the 16-17 boys” division, Lucas McBride of Kelseyville topped the field with 92. The next three finishers, all from Kelseyville, were Darrin Sullivan (100), Wes Stevenson (102) and Scott Luis (103).

In the 12-13 boys” division, Josh Sumpter of Cloverdale carded a 101 to win his age bracket by four shots. Max Huff of Clear Lake Riviera was second with 105 and Wyatt Ferrell of Kelseyville came in third with 110.

In the 9-11 boys” division, Stone Phillips of Lakeport defended his title, shooting a nine-hole score of 54. Two shots back in second place was Tyler Bailey of Cobb with 56. Cody Beets of Lakeport was third with 61 and Max Whitaker of Clear Lake Riviera finished fourth with 65.

Lisa Copeland of Hidden Valley Lake won her third consecutive Lake County Junior — equaling a girls” tournament record set by Jennifer Harvey and later matched by Kelsey Sturges) — with a score of 40 for nine holes.

Copeland had a very good week on the links, winning the 36-hole Chico Junior title on Monday and the Buckingham Summer Junior on Tuesday.

She is playing in the 36-hole Humboldt County Junior on Thursday and Friday.

Liz Berry of Kelseyville won the girls” 12-13 division with a 59.

The next junior-oriented event in Lake County is the Junior-Parent/Grandparent Tournament on Sept. 23 at Buckingham Golf and Country Club.
