In rebuttal to letters to the editor dated Aug. 26 from the two Lucerne citizens in opposition to a new 50-room hotel in Lucerne (“The rumble of redevelopment” and “It”s a dumb idea,” Readers” Views): I have lived in the area for the last 28 years and vacationed here for 22 years before that. In the last 50 years Lucerne has gone backwards while most of the state”s rural areas have flourished economically.

It boggles my mind that after 50 years of watching the area going backward and finally someone (he must have dropped out of heaven) is willing to rid the town of some of those old dilapidated buildings and construct a new 50-room hotel with all the modern amenities, how could anyone possibly object unless they prefer to live in squalor?

It is no wonder why Lucerne is such a depressed area with the negative attitude toward redevelopment.

The only positive thing for Lucerne was Andy Peterson”s effort through the redevelopment agency. It”s going to be a sad day for Lucerne since Andy Peterson is retiring.
