The letter to the editor from Dick Forbes regarding rent stabilization included incorrect information regarding Proposition 90 (“Rent stabilization needed,” Readers” Views, Aug. 30).
Proposition 90 would not restrict or curtail any further rent stabilization ordinances. This is false information.
What Proposition 90 would do is to “require government to pay property owners if it passes certain new laws or rules that result in substantial economic losses to their property. “
But: “All existing laws and rules would be exempt from the measure”s compensation requirement. “
So what Proposition 90 states is basically that all laws enacted after November if it passes would require the government to reimburse park owners for any losses in space rents that might be experienced as a result of any new laws.
It certainly does not, however, prohibit any such new laws from being enacted, as Mr. Forbes so erroneously stated. Maybe it would be helpful if he were to actually read the text of Proposition 90 before writing about it so that he could get his facts straight.
The above quotes are from the Proposition 90 Web site, www.ss.ca.gov/elections/elections_j.htm#2006General.
