LAKEPORT — Hero, the German shepherd found seriously malnourished and neglected and rescued from a Lakeport home in July is today happily in the hands of his new pet guardians.

Animal Care & Control program manager Paula Werner said Hero has been renamed “Remi” and, although it was originally thought that he should be the only dog in his new household, he will share his new home with a pair of 6-week-old twins and two black Labrador sisters who were themselves adopted from Golden Gate Labrador Retriever Rescue in Bruno.

In regard to his new family, Werner said, “We think he deserves to be in a home which is committed to his physical and mental well-being and he is. We should all be so lucky to live in a home with a family like them. It”s a perfect fit.”

Werner said Animal Care & Control received a total of 15 applications for Hero and seven were ultimately approved.

Now Hero, recently neutered and renamed by his new family, resides in Granite Bay and loves to play catch with his tennis ball on a daily basis. His new family said he”s settling in, and has taken to carrying around a stuffed frog they gave him.

Dr. Chris Holmes at Wasson Memorial Veterinary Clinic was in charge of caring for Hero after he was taken from his previous home.

Besides malnourishment, Holmes said he treated Hero for mange, a bacterial infection, a yeast infection, and operated on Hero twice in order to pull hundreds of foxtails out of all four of his feet and his legs.

Holmes said that Hero also had been brought to Wasson Memorial for treatment in February of 2003 with the same problems foxtails in all four feet and a skin infection.

No word yet on whether his previous owner will be prosecuted.
