LAKEPORT — Trying to hang on for a tie against the Calistoga Wildcats, the Clear Lake Cardinals were only too happy to win 3-2 in a non-league varsity boys” soccer game Thursday in Lakeport.
And they can thank senior Brian Tavares for that.
Tavares, a center/defender for the Cardinals, made nearly a full length-of-the-field charge to score the winning goal in the 78th minute, snapping a 2-2 tie. A tired Clear Lake team then had to hold for the final two minutes of regulation and six minutes of extra time before their first win of the season was a done deal.
“Two games in two days was tough,” Clear Lake coach Brian Figg said. “We went from trying to hang on for a tie to trying to hang on to a win. We barely made it.”
Tavares busted the 2-2 tie with a goal that nearly lifted the frame off the ground, according to Figg.
“I”m hoping for a tie and out of nowhere, he comes charging down the field, fighting off one player after another,” Figg said. “Then he pounded the ball into the back of the net.”
Just as they did in a 2-2 tie against Willits on Wednesday, the Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 first-half lead on goals by Andres Perez (10th minute) and Armando Martinez (17th minute).
Calistoga closed to 2-1 with a goal in the 60th minute and then pulled even on a 70th-minute score.
“They didn”t have many shots, but they take advantage when they did,” Figg said of the Wildcats.
The Cardinals play Anderson Valley on Monday in Boonville at 4:30 p.m.
