LAKEPORT — It wasn”t their best effort of the season but it was still a win for the Clear Lake Cardinals on Thursday as they held off a determined bunch of Middletown Mustangs, 3-1, in a North Central League I interlock varsity girls” soccer game at Clear Lake High School.

“I think Middletown did a good job, they worked hard, hustled and probably outhustled us,” Clear Lake co-coach Paul Larrea said. “We just didn”t play very well but we did what we needed to do. We”re 6-0 so I can”t complain about that.”

“I was really impressed with the girls,” Middletown coach Louise Owens said. “We stepped it up. They played at a very different level.”

In fact, Owens said the Mustangs (1-2) played better against undefeated Clear Lake than they did in their last game, an 8-0 win over Cloverdale.

“We had about four good shots in the first half that didn”t get in,” Owens said.

Jacquie Tobin scored in the second half for Middletown to make it a 2-1 game at that time.

Clear Lake”s goals were scored by Haley Sanderson, who also had an assist, Karina Martinez and Kaila Sterbank.

Middletown keeper Kayla Welton logged 12 saves.

Owens also credited Zoe Everett, Alex Snodgrass and Teina Moore with a strong defensive effort.

“They did a fantastic job defensively those three,” Owens said.
