LOWER LAKE — Genesis Gutierrez scored late in the second half with an assist from Kaleena Budwell as the Lower Lake Trojans scrambled to tie the Cloverdale Eagles 1-1 in a North Central League I interlock varsity girls” soccer game at Lower Lake.

The Trojans (1-3-3) had many more shots on goal than the Eagles but couldn”t get the ball past Cloverdale”s goalie, with the exception of the Gutierrez goal.

“We were peppering the goal with shots,” Lower Lake coach Pam Campbell said. “We were peppering her but we kept hitting it right at her.”

Cloverdale led 1-0 at halftime.

Anchoring the Lower Lake defense were fullback T”keyah Denson and halfback Alyssa Hood, according to Campbell.

“She played her best game by far,” Campbell said of Hood, who is playing her first year at the varsity level.

As for Denson, who is playing soccer for the first time, Campbell said, “She had a great game.”

The Trojans travel to Petaluma on Tuesday to play St. Vincent.

K”ville 2, Upper Lake 1

At Kelseyville, sophomore forward Angelina Ryan scored two second-half goals to give the Kelseyville Knights their first win of the season.

Upper Lake led 1-0 at halftime on a Yessica Ayala goal.

“They looked good against St. Helena and they looked good again today,” Kelseyville coach Michael Leuck said of the Knights” first two games of 2006 (Kelseyville lost 6-0 at St. Helena on Tuesday). “They played a good defensive game and they passed the ball well. They took up the challenge, worked hard and refused to give up.”

Upper Lake fell to 2-4 overall. Kelseyville is 1-1.

Varsity boys” soccer

Clear Lake 7, M”town 0

At Middletown, Clear Lake”s Fabian Guzman scored three times and had two assists as the Cardinals shut out the Mustangs (0-4).

Guzman scored the only two goals of the first half, the first on a penalty kick 13 minutes into the game and the second with an assist from freshman Ivan Sanchez at the 35th minute.

Armando Martinez pushed the Cardinals” lead to 4-0 early in the second half, scoring twice within a span of three minutes.

Guzman, Connor McCrea and Brian Tavares added insurance goals.

“He played the whole game and he was all over the place,” Clear Lake coach Brian Figg said of Guzman. “From assisting to scoring he was all over the place, but so was the whole team.”

The Mustangs hung in there as long as they could, according to Figg.

“I think we outran them but I wouldn”t say we outhustled them,” Figg said. “They tried hard.”

K”ville 5, Upper Lake 2

At Upper Lake, Miguel Martinez had a hat trick and Andres Macias and Gustavo Valadez also chipped in with goals as the Kelseyville Knights beat the Upper Lake Cougars.

Kelseyville (2-0) had a 3-1 lead at halftime and went on to hand the Cougars (5-2) only their second loss of the season.

“They were a tough team, they played together,” Upper Lake coach Joe Womachka said. “Everybody played hard … it was just one of those games.”

“Their defense was tough to break,” Kelseyville coach Eduardo Ledesma said. “But they (Kelseyville forwards) did some great passing up front to get through.”

Ledesma also credited Kelseyville keeper John Kincannon with a solid effort in the net.

“He did a great job,” Ledesma said.

Javier Cruz and Max Curtis scored for the Cougars.

Volleyball

Upper Lake def. M”town

At Middletown, Upper Lake won a marathon NCL I interlock match against Middletown, beating the host Mustangs 24-26, 25-18, 24-26, 27-25, 15-10.

Kayla Wood had a big night for Middletown with 11 assists, seven kills, four blocks, six aces and five digs, Kristina MacPherson added five kills, seven digs and five aces

“I”m very proud of my girls and I”m impressed with what I saw,” Middletown coach Dore Holt said. “We did give them a run for their money.”

Rebecca Grupe”s six kills and four blocks powered Upper Lake. Caity Falge also had six kills.

JV girls” soccer

Clear Lake 2, Ukiah 0

At Lakeport, goals by Tara Bastian and Monique Liddiard and another fine effort by the Clear Lake defense yielded another win as the Clear Lake Cardinals blanked the Ukiah Wildcats.

Clear Lake is 7-1-1 on the season, its only loss to a varsity team.

JV volleyball

Ukiah def. Clear Lake

At Lakeport, Ukiah beat Clear Lake 25-21, 25-19 in a non-league junior varisty volleyball match.

Briana Butcher”s five kills paced the Cardinals up front. Apryl Comstock added two kills, six service points and an ace, while Katie Reynolds had six points, two aces and 11 assists.
