LOWER LAKE — Upper Lake fullback Dylan Kettwig ran for 127 yards and two touchdowns and also led the Cougars with 12 overall tackles in an 18-6 North Central League I interlock varsity football win over the Lower Lake Trojans on Friday night at Gordon Sadler Field in Lower Lake.
Kettwig scored on 2- and 3-yard runs in the first quarter as the Cougars (2-0) opened up a 12-0 lead, which proved to be more than enough for Upper Lake”s first-string defense, which still hasn”t allowed a point this season.
The Trojans (0-2) did break up the shutout on the game”s final play when quarterback Jake Sanders and wide receiver Brett Lambert connected on a 25-yard touchdown.
“Obviously the defense played well,” Upper Lake coach Craig Kinser said. “I”m starting to think this defense is pretty good.”
Chris Anderson scored on a 20-yard run in the third quarter to boost the Cougars” lead to 18-0.
Lower Lake lost a fumble on the game”s first play to set up Upper Lake”s first touchdown. It was one of four turnovers overall for the Trojans.
“We drove the ball but couldn”t finish, which is a credit to their defense,” Lower Lake coach Joe Marinello said.
Lower Lake”s defense turned in an admirable effort, according to Marinello, who said the Trojans were able to keep the Cougars” passing game in check. Upper Lake had just 55 yards through the air.
“Their trap play killed us,” Marinello said. “But the kids did a good job of adjusting in the second half.”
Lower Lake”s Richard Richardson was in on 10 tackles. Oguilin was in on 11 tackles for Upper Lake and Kieron McCarthy recovered a pair of fumbles.
Fullback Mike Deakins had 54 yards on 18 carries to lead Lower Lake”s ground game. Steve Arson added 41 on nine carries.
