M”town 2, Upper Lake 1

At Upper Lake, Upper Lake”s Daniella Santana scored three minutes into the game but the Middletown Mustangs rallied for a 2-1 victory on the strength of goals by Jacquie Tobin (first half) and Kayla Welton (second half).

Just two minutes after Santana gave Upper Lake a 1-0 lead, Tobin, with an assist from Amber Lofton, knotted the score at 1-1. It remained tied until the 58th minute when Welton, against with an assist from Lofton, put the Mustangs ahead to stay at 2-1.

“Both teams I think played real well,” Upper Lake coach Ana Santana said. “Their forwards have great skills. I was really impressed.”

“They out-shot us in the first half,” Middletown coach Louise Owens said. “They were very determined and outhustled us.”

Middletown (2-2) regrouped at halftime, according to Owens.

“It took us until the half to readjust and refocus,” she said.

Middletown keeper Kelsey Welton had seven saves five in the first half.

Upper Lake fell to 2-5.

Clear Lake 2, Fort Bragg 1

At Lakeport, the Clear Lake Cardinals rebounded from a 3-0 loss to Rincon Valley Christian on Saturday with a hard-fought win over the Fort Bragg Timberwolves.

Clear Lake (7-1) scored the only two goals of the first half, the first on a hard shot by Haley Sanderson 15 minutes into the game and the other by Karina Martinez right before halftime.

Julie Jackson worked the ball up the sideline and crossed the ball inside to Martinez, who fired a shot past the out-of-position Fort Bragg keeper.

“Fort Bragg played very well,” Clear Lake co-coach Paul Larrea said. “They kick the ball a lot and that means you”re playing the ball in the air. That makes it tough on us because we”re not the biggest team out there but we did a good job and won a lot of balls.”

Already missing two starters in Anisa Green and Samantha Espinoza, the Cardinals had to do without the services of stopper Kim Lajcik, who is nursing a sore achilles tendon. To compensate, the Cardinals moved midfielder Sanderson into Lajcik”s position and freshman Megan McDonald took over at Sanderson”s midfielder spot.

“She moved into Haley”s spot and did a really nice job,” Larrea said.

Clear Lake allowed only three shots on goal, one of which Fort Bragg converted into its only score in the second half.
