LAKEPORT — Armando Martinez scored twice and the Clear Lake Cardinals built a 3-0 halftime lead en route to a 3-1 win over the Kelseyville Knights in a North Central League I interlock varsity boys” soccer win on Thursday in Lakeport.
Martinez scored his first goal just six minutes into the game with help from teammate Brian Tavares, who earned the assist. Martinez struck again at the 30th minute with a penalty kick that made it 2-0.
A defensive misplay by the Knights right before the half allowed K.C. White to punch a shot past the Kelseyville keeper and into the goal for a 3-0 Clear Lake lead.
“It was very physical, there were quite a few fouls,” Clear Lake coach Brian Figg said. “A lot of kids walked away limping. Armando was limping late in the game but he didn”t want to come out.”
Miguel Martinez scored in the second half for Kelseyville (3-1), which lost for the first time this season.
Clear Lake improved to 4-2-1.
St. Helena 11, Lower Lake 2
At St. Helena, Sergio Avila and Antonio Aceves scored in the first half for Lower Lake, but the Trojans couldn”t keep pace with the St. Helena Saints in NCL I interlock action.
The Trojans (2-6) stayed close for a half, but the Saints pulled away in the second half.
“The first half was excellent,” Lower Lake coach Joe Parker said. “But in the second half I had nearly all freshmen out there with two sophomores. They did well.”
Girls” soccer
Clear Lake 5, Kelseyville 1
At Kelseyville, Karina Martinez scored four times and the Clear Lake Cardinals improved to 8-1 by beating the Kelseyville Knights in NCL I interlock action.
Martinez scored three of Clear Lake”s four goals in the first half and Haley Sanderson had the other.
“Clear Lake is a quality soccer team,” Kelseyville coach Michael Leuck said. “They”re very good passers.”
The Knights (2-2) were a bit intimidated by the Cardinals in the first half but settled down in the second, according to Leuck.
“We had a rough first half, but we came out strong in the second half,” Leuck said.
Tiffany Cocco scored in the second half for the Knights.
Fort Bragg 4, Upper Lake 1
At Upper Lake, Daniella Santana scored in the first half for Upper Lake, but the Fort Bragg Timberwolves had the only three goals in the second half to beat the Cougars in NCL I interlock action.
Courtney Gatton assisted on Santana”s goal during a 1-1 first half.
Defensive standouts for the Cougars (2-6) were Rachel Godwin, D.J. Bohlen, Ashley Dotson and keeper Crystal Snider with seven saves.
“We did what we could but they”re just a little swifter on the passing,” Upper Lake coach Ana Santana said of the Timberwolves.
St. Helena 6, Lower Lake 0
At Lower Lake, the St. Helena Saints shut out the Lower Lake Trojans in NCL I interlock action at Gordon Sadler Field.
“St. Helena is a really good team,” Lower Lake coach Pam Campbell said. “They have a goalie who clears the ball like 60 yards every time.”
Defensive standouts for the Trojans were Megan Riley, Shelby Myrick, Kerry Guevara and Kaila Budwell.
M”town 0, St. Vincent 0 (tie)
At Petaluma, one day after winning the varsity girls” race in the Lake County Meet, Middletown High School keeper Kelsey Welton stopped 19 shots on goal to preserve a tie with powerhouse St. Vincent.
“The girls are so excited,” Middletown coach Louise Owens said. “They told me they”ve never shut out St. Vincent before.”
Middletown (2-2-1) was without starters Shelby Davis (hamstring) and Teina Moore (hip), but managed to compensate.
“Two of our key starters were out but we still kept them scoreless, so I”m very happy about that,” Owens said.
Middletown”s offense didn”t apply much pressure on St. Vincent”s defense but did manage a few breakaways.
“But we couldn”t put anything in,” Owens said.
Along with Welton, Owens said Alex Snodgrass” play on defense was key to keeping St. Vincent off the scoreboard.
“Our defense just came together tonight. We figured it out,” Owens said.
