MIDDLETOWN — Pacific Gas & Electric Co. (PG&E) is hosting a community meeting today to discuss the status of a local waste facility.

Company representatives will be on hand to address the cleanup and closure of the GI facility, a former 40-acre geothermal waste facility located on Butts Canyon Road.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 to 8 p.m. at the Calpine Visitor Center, 15550 Central Park Road.

A company statement said that over the last three years PG&E has worked with local and state regulatory agencies to complete the site cleanup and closure.

The project has reportedly included solar evaporation of 21 million gallons of pond water, excavation and solidification of 186,000 cubic yards of waste, closure of seven former waste evaporation ponds totaling 30 acres, removal of abandoned equipment and miscellaneous debris, grading of 90 acres to improve drainage, planting of 32 acres of poplar and eucalyptus trees, construction of three acres of new wetlands and additional habit restoration, and installation of fire suppression water supply and irrigation systems.

The company said it will continue to monitor the cleanup”s effectiveness and containment systems.
