Kerrie Hershey will be the “featured quilt artist” at the fifth annual Falling Leaves Quilt Show put on by the Ladies of the Lake Quilt Guild. The show takes place from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 8, at the Lake County Fairgrounds at 401 Martin Street in Lakeport.
Hershey describes herself as a traditional quilter, one who likes traditional patterns, and uses a variety of colors to achieve the traditional look. Scrappy quilts, composed of many assorted fabrics, are another of her favorite styles. Although she chooses an old-fashioned look for her quilts, Hershey often creates them with modern methods 9 speed-cutting the fabric with a rotary cutter and assembling the quilts by machine. She does some long-arm machine quilting when time permits, but always has a hand-quilting project in progress. Quilt show guests will see many examples of her work and will see why one of her quilts earned the “Best Machine Workmanship 9 Traditional” award at the 2003 Pacific International Quilt Show in Santa Clara.
Hershey, one of the many women who have developed careers around quilting, opened Kerrie”s Quilting in her home in 1991. Finding that the business was outgrowing the space, she relocated to her “itty bitty quilt shop” at 1853 High Street in Lakeport in 2001. Hershey also conducts four quilting retreats each year. Not content with being a shop owner, teacher and lecturer, she has also published two patterns with Quiltsmart.
