UPDATED:

On Sept. 17, the Macias family, including Shauna, Jessica, Nicole, Gina, Jesse Jr. and friends, had their annual walk in memory of their father and our friend, Jesse Macias.

You may remember that it was three years ago, Sept. 17, that Jesse was walking home from work at the Leaky Tiki when he was struck down by a “hit and run driver.” He was thrown so far off the road that he was not discovered until the next morning. A friend who was sent out to look for him found him in Keeling Park.

Jesse was struck down at a time in his life when his relationship with his kids was starting to flourish. He also left behind four grandchildren who will not have the chance for a relationship with their grandpa.

As for his friends, we still torture ourselves with thoughts that maybe we could have done something differently that night, something that would have interrupted the chain of events that led up to the death of our friend.

So, every year on Sept. 17, we will walk with regrets and with remembrances, but we also will take the time to give our thanks to Shelly Hunt for making it all possible.

Please don”t drink and drive.
