Rehearsals are heating up for Lake County Repertory Theater”s gala premier of “Legerdemain,” a dramatic play conjuring up the world of magic as well as human nature. Set in the 1920s, the opening night audience can expect a feast for the eyes as well as the imagination.
“Legerdemain” is a new play by Michael Wolfson, the winner of the 2006 Lake County Repertory Theater Company play writing contest, which included a field of more than 100 entries from across the United States. “The contest just continues to grow every year,” said contest organizer, Linda Altman. “I am thrilled with not only the number of participants, but the quality of the plays. It”s truly amazing!”
Although “Legerdemain” will be Wolfson”s first play performed in Lake County, he has won national recognition for earlier works, including “Undue Influence,” which starred none other than Amy Irving and Ed Asner when produced at L.A. Theater Works. Others of his plays have been performed in Ashland, Ore., Buffalo, N.Y. and Spokane, Wash.
Mr. Wolfson will attend the debut of his play at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 13, and has graciously consented to be available to theater goers for questions and answers after the performance. “Legerdemain” will treat audiences to the familiar talents of Bert Hurt and Rod Rehe as well as the charm of newcomers Rochelle Thompson, Diana Manges and Tim Barns. Surprises will abound as the clever presentation draws the viewer toward “undeniable truth.”
The play will take place at 7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 13, 14, 20 and 21; and at 2 p.m. Sundays, Oct. 15 and 22, in Weaver Auditorium at the Lower Lake School House Museum in Lower Lake. Tickets are on sale at Catfish Books, Lake County Arts Council, the Lower Lake museum or at the door; general admission is $12, seniors admitted for $10. A wine bar will be available.
