LAKEPORT — Auto racing returns to the Lakeport Speedway today, Saturday and Sunday as the 17th running of the KXBX October Classic takes place at the Lakeport Speedway.

This special event features seven divisions of race cars and is the biggest event of the year at the quarter-mile paved oval. It”s also the final racing event for the 2006 season.

The winner in the 60-lap modified division will take home $2,000. Lakeport Speedway champion Terry McIntire of Kelseyville will have his hands full with the many visiting modified drivers, including some from the state of Oregon.

Returning to the speedway after a year”s absence will be the Airport Auto Brokers Late Models. The Potter Valley Tribe and BAD racing have sponsored the $1,250 first-place prize in the 50-lap race. The fastest qualifier in both the modified and the Late Model divisions will take home $100 courtesy of Furia Construction and Northern California Racing Association.

Drivers running in the bomber division will not only be running for $500 to win, but they also will be entered in the Lakeport/Shasta Bomber Challenge. This series continues at Shasta Raceway Park in Anderson on Oct. 21-22 and also supports a $1,000 points fund.

Also on the racing card are bonus bombers, street stocks, mini-stocks and Pro-4 modifieds. Pre-entries for these events include drivers from the All-American Speedway in Roseville, Shasta Raceway Park, Ukiah Speedway, Lakeport Speedway and Redwood Acres Raceway in Eureka.

The event begins with a Friday afternoon practice session from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. followed by first-round qualifying. Saturday night”s show includes second-round qualifying with trophy dashes and 20-lap qualifying races beginning at 6:30 pm. Gates open at 4 p.m.

Sunday will see feature events in all seven divisions. Gates open at 11 a.m. with afternoon racing beginning at 1 p.m. Admission prices are $11 for adults, $9 for seniors (62 and older) and students (12-17), and $5 for kids (age 6-11). A special adult two-day ticket is available for $19.
