The Lake County District Attorney”s Office is investigating the fatal shooting of a motorist by a California Highway Patrol officer. The name of the officer and the name of the motorist have not been released.
At approximately 1:14 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, Williams area CHP units initiated the pursuit of a reckless vehicle traveling on State Route 45 near the Colusa Casino. Williams area CHP units continued to pursue the vehicle into Lake County westbound on State Route 20.
Once the pursuit entered into Lake County, Clear Lake area CHP units took over the pursuit with Williams area CHP units continuing to follow. CHP units successfully performed a pit maneuver to terminate the pursuit at State Route 20 and Sulphur Bank Road.
At the termination point, the vehicle began to ram CHP units. The vehicle began to accelerate toward a CHP officer who had exited his vehicle. Another CHP officer fired his weapon at the driver of the vehicle in an attempt to prevent the officer from being injured.
The driver was struck and stopped his vehicle. He received medical attention on the scene and was flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
