James Walter Combs passed away Oct. 18, 2006 at home with his family, at the age of 83. Born Aug. 4, 1923 in Little Rock, Ark., James was a Lake County resident for 36 years, before moving to be with his daughter in Vacaville.

He was the owner of Jay”s Auto Service in Clearlake Oaks for 16 years.

He was very involved in the Masons, was Past Master of the Clearlake Lodge #183 and Inspector of the 106th Masonic District.

He had a passion for cars and motorcycles, in his younger years racing for Harley Davidson and later riding with his wife, Ruth. He and his wife also belonged to the Lake County Good Sam Club.

James was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Ruth Combs.

He is survived by his children, James Ronald Combs of Lubbock, Texas, Gary Wayne Combs of Phoenix, Ariz., and Valerie Lynn Keating of Vacaville; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters and one brother.

A viewing will be held for James from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 22 at Jones and Lewis Clear Lake Memorial Chapel, 16140 Main St. in Lower Lake. As a founding member of the First Baptist Church of Clearlake Oaks, James” funeral service will be held at the place where he worshiped for most of his life. The funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23 with a committal service to follow at Lower Lake Cemetery.

The family requests any donations be made to Vallejo Kaiser Hospice, 975 Sereno Dr., Vallejo, CA 94589.
