LAKEPORT — A Clearlake man shot last month at point-blank range during a shooting spree was transferred this week from UC Davis Medical Center”s intensive care ward to the rehabilitation and physical therapy unit.
Terry Cain, 47, was shot early on the morning of Sept. 10, allegedly by 36-year-old Wilbur Cope, who also is accused of shooting three other people that day, including Michele Cain, Terry Cain”s wife, and Sharon England.
Cope faces a murder charge for the death of Kristin Raviotta, the fourth person he allegedly shot that day.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, Cope”s preliminary hearing in the case was rescheduled for Dec. 8.
Cain”s sister, Santa Rosa resident Francesca Mulas, said Cain has been intubated a procedure in which a tube is inserted in the throat to aid breathing and extubated (removal of the tube) five times.
He now has a tracheotomy, which is a surgical procedure performed on the neck to open an airway through an incision in the windpipe, said Mulas.
“It will be a long road ahead, ” said Mulas, adding that Cain faces, “at least of year of rehabilitation and more surgeries for the skin grafting and possibly for the nerve damage.”
Mulas said Cain has suffered from strokes. He has one tennis ball-sized hole and three golf ball-sized holes in his right arm, she added.
The family is facing catastrophic medical costs; just Cain”s 37-day stay in the intensive care unit alone will cost approximately $400,000, Mulas reported.
Despite this, Mulas is thankful and hopeful and optimistic. “With a lot of love and support Terry may even be able to walk again,” she said.
The Terry Cain Recovery Fund has been set up at Westamerica Bank and anyone who would like to help the Cain family can make a donation at any Westamerica Bank in the county. Checks may also be mailed to the fund at P.O. Box 2080, Clearlake, CA 95422 or to Westamerica”s Clearlake branch, 15342 Lakeshore Drive.
In addition, Terry Cain”s daughter-in-law, Renee Cain, said donations can be dropped off at her place of work, Loeb”s Ink Spot in Lakeport, 95 Third St., telephone 263-0569.
Mulas also said well wishers and fellow NASCAR fans also may send messages to the family at terrycainrecovery@yahoo.com.
