Darrell Watkins” recent letter to the editor demonstrates that he believes himself to be a wise man (“Counsel from wise men,” Readers” Views, Oct. 21). On July 4, 1776, a group of truly wise men declared that all people “are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
The criminal defense attorney is charged with the protection and preservation of these important rights.
Another very wise man gave his life on a cross in order to achieve forgiveness for all of mankind.
“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you” (Eph. 4:32) and “Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you” (Col. 3:13).
Take note, Mr. Watkins: a person does not have to be “godless” to believe that justice should be tempered with forgiveness and compassion.
