“Don”t Be Tricked — Drugs Are No Treat!” is the message the City of Clearlake and the Konocti Unified School District will be sending to the youth of the community for a safe and enjoyable Halloween. The city and the local school district have combined forces to keep children drug free and will be using Halloween as a means to deliver that message.
Students throughout the district, in first through fifth grade, will receive a reflective trick-or-treat bag, which will read “City of Clearlake & Konocti Unified School District, Don”t Be Tricked ? Drugs Are No Treat!” Trick-or-treaters are also invited to city hall from noon to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31 where costumed, city and school district representatives will be handing out Halloween goodies. As an added treat, local residents Ron and Millie Cole will break out the clown shoes and red noses for a guest appearance by Tooter and Gingersnap along with Monkey Monk the puppet.
“In the interest of our local youth, the City of Clearlake would like to contribute to making this Halloween a fun, safe and drug free event for our community,” said Vice Mayor Judy Thein, “and the reflective trick-or-treat bags are going to be especially great for the safety of our kids.”
The total cost to the city is $709.38 for 2500 reflective trick-or-treat bags to be given out at every elementary school in the Konocti district. Bags will also be available at city hall on Oct. 31, along with cookies, punch and Halloween treats.
The reflective bags include tips for staying safe on Halloween:
* Go trick-or-treating with a grown-up.
* Visit only people you know.
* Make sure your costume lets you see and hear perfectly. You need to be able to watch and listen for cars.
* Make sure your costume fits. It”s easy to trip on costumes that are too big.
* Wear brightly colored clothing. Put glow-in-the-dark patches or strips on your costume so drivers can see you.
* Carry a flashlight.
Also taking place Halloween night is the annual haunted house at the local fire station on Olympic Drive. Lake County Fire Protection District Volunteer Firefighters” Association welcomes the community to the station for a frightfully good time in the gloomy, eerie haunted house. There will also be a fun house for the little ones too afraid to venture through the dark maze of the feature attraction. Goodwill donations will be accepted and greatly appreciated.
Calvary Chapel on Memory Lane in Clearlake will also host its annual harvest fest and carnival beginning at 6 p.m. on Halloween.
