I have found that most people fall into one of three categories concerning gay rights. People either disagree, agree or don”t care. They either outwardly hate them, feel sympathetic and actively support them, or they say something to the effect of, “As long as they don”t hit on me, I don”t care.”
The outwardly slanderous group of people can be shut down with various responses to their unthought-out arguments. The argument, “It goes against God! And the Bible!” are easily checked with a few references to Leviticus and Exodus that they themselves are subject to; working on Sundays, touching a woman on her period, touching pig skin and cutting hair. The Bible is a good story book, with some basic morals to be gotten out of it, but most of what is said is not to be taken literally, or applied to modern society. We no longer have slaves or burn sacrifices to God.
For those who claim it is unnatural, I have one sentence for you. There are 476 known animals that behave homosexually. To the ones who are supporters of gay rights, and gay marriage in general, I say “Good for you.” You have your head on straight, and you give me hope for humanity.
The basis to the United States is freedom. No one can deny the fact that homosexuals are people, and as such, have claim to the basic rights that go with being a human; as John Locke said, Life, Liberty, Property, and the right/obligation to overthrow an unresponsive or repressive government. If we write discrimination and hate into the constitution (the Marriage Amendment Act) we will not only be denying a whole group of people the natural rights that we ourselves take advantage of, but we will be opening the door to have other rights taken from us for various reasons, and soon, we will be back to square one, with a totalitarian despotism.
