I would like to commend the voters of Clearlake for having the good sense to overwhelmingly reject the sales tax increase measure. Since the tax revenues would have passed into the general fund, I doubt that we would have gotten much if anything for our money in the way of street repair.

If there is agreement that the Clearlake streets need work, then it is time for the City Council to get to work applying for and lobbying for vehicle-related taxes already collected by the State and Federal governments. That”s what they should have done in the first place. Adding more taxes to an already burdened public adds pain but guarantees very little asphalt.

A tax is a tax is a tax whether levied by Washington, Sacramento or Clearlake. We”ve got to make government understand that we just won”t stand for any more taxes.
