ST. HELENA — One night after registering its first victory of the 2006-07 season, the Kelseyville High School varsity girls” basketball team simply made too many mistakes while handling the basketball and fell 53-41 to the South Fork Cubs in the winner”s semifinal round of the St. Helena Tournament on Friday evening in St. Helena.

“We had way too many turnovers,” Kelseyville coach Jim Salmina said.

While Salmina was hopeful that his starting point guard, senior Jill Bailey, would be able to play against the Cubs, her ankle injury kept her off the floor and she probably won”t be back anytime soon.

“I”m not going to have her for that game (today”s third-place game) and I may not have her next week (for the Hoopa Tournament),” Salmina said.

Lauren Nixon scored 14 points and Jodi Snider added 11, including three 3-pointers, to spark Kelseyville”s offense. The Knights entered halftime tied 20-20 but the Cubs surged ahead in the third quarter, taking advantage of several Kelseyville turnovers generated by the Cubs” press.

South Fork led 39-20 going to the fourth quarter.

Amanda Mueller had nine points for the Knights, now 1-4 on the season.

In other games Friday:

Upper Lake 49, Geyserville 17

At Potter Valley, it looked like another rough outing on offense for the Upper Lake Cougars as they went scoreless through the first two minutes against the Geyserville Bronchos in a consolation game at the Potter Valley Tournament.

But that was nothing compared to Geyserville”s offensive woes. By the time the first quarter ended the scoreboard read Upper Lake 15, Geyserville 0.

And the Cougars (1-6) continued to pull away from the Bronchos while cruising to their first win of the season.

Cierra Peel scored 15 points, Rebecca Breton had 12 and Caity Falge added eight.

Mount Shasta 63, Clear Lake 61

At St. Helena, Brittany Rumfelt”s last-second shot from inside the 3-point line rimmed out as time expired and the Cardinals lost a close one to Mount Shasta in the consolation semifinals of the St. Helena Tournament.

Mount Shasta hit the first of two free throws with 2.2 seconds remaining to open up a 63-61 lead. Clear Lake (2-4) rushed the ball down the floor and a well-covered Kaila Sterbank dished the ball to Rumfelt.

“It was a heart-stopping moment watching the ball,” Clear Lake coach Jen Goff said of Rumfelt”s potential game-tying shot.

Rumfelt finished with a team-best and season-high 26 points. Emilee Meyer added nine points and Kelsie Kennedy had seven.

Piner 41, Middletown 36

At Fortuna, trailing by as many as 13 points earlier in the game, the Middletown Mustangs cut that deficit to three with 1:30 remaining before falling to the Piner Prospectors in the consolation semifinal round of the Fortuna Tournament.

“We just couldn”t finish the job,” Middletown coach Marnin Pyzer said as his Mustangs fell to 0-7 on the season. “The girls kept working hard and we put a scare into Piner.”

Nikeedra Davis” 14 points paced Middletown and Kayla Welton added 10, including a 3-pointer.

Middletown lost 66-32 to tournament host Fortuna in first-round action Thursday. Kayla Welton led the way with 19 points.

and Davis had nine.

“Fortuna is a very solid team,” Pyzer said.
