UPDATED:

In an effort to keep Lake County roads safe and litter free, the County recently adopted an ordinance establishing a surcharge on unsecured loads arriving at both the Eastlake Landfill and Lakeport Transfer Station. Effective Jan. 1, 2007, pickup trucks and passenger vehicles pulling trailers with untarped or unsecured loads will pay a $10 surcharge; commercial vehicles will pay $100. The surcharge will be added to the customer”s disposal fee and be used to offset the costs of community cleanups.

Studies show that 40 percent of litter comes from the back of uncovered pickup trucks and trailers including a significant amount from unsecured garbage cans and bags on their way to the landfill or transfer station. The surcharge for unsecured loads will provide the incentive for people to cover and secure loads appropriately to significantly reduce the amount of litter coming from transfer station and landfill-bound vehicles.
