LAKEPORT — Council member Roy Parmentier was elected Lakeport”s new mayor at the city council”s Dec. 5 meeting when new council members Jim Irwin and Ron Bertsch were sworn in. Buzz Bruns was elected mayor pro tem.
Every year at the council”s first December meeting, city council members elect two of its own to serve one-year terms as mayor and mayor pro tem. Parmentier told the Record-Bee Thursday that this will be his fourth time serving as Lakeport”s mayor after holding the position in 1991, 1994 and 1997.
He has served a total of 14 years on the city council. He was originally elected in 1988 and took a four-year break in 2000.
Pointing to some of his past successes as mayor and as a council member, Parmentier outlined some of his priorities on a long list of things he wants to accomplish this year.
“You”re going to see a different attitude in the city this year. We”re going to be pro-active; we”re going to get some things done,” he said.
On his list are projects such as “fixing our streets, water and sewer issues, and better customer service,” said Parmentier.
One of the things he hopes to accomplish is the acquisition of the property on which the city”s wells sit, currently under long-term lease.
Other projects include expanding the city”s sphere of influence to include an area on the Hopland grade off of Highway 175 where a golf course is planned to be constructed. Parmentier said the 600 homes planned for the area will generate significant revenue for the city, which he said will fund a new sewage treatment project.
“I”m hoping this year that we”ll be able to put some asphalt down to show the people where their money”s going,” he said.
Also at the top of Parmentier”s list is hiring a new city manager, which he expects will happen sometime in January of 2007.
