LAKE COUNTY — CHP deployed 80 percent of its personnel over the Christmas holiday weekend.

“We had maximum enforcement from Friday to Monday, Dec. 22-25, and plan to do the same over New Year”s weekend, from the 29 through Jan. 1,” said CHP officer Josh Dye.

Last weekend CHP reports that there were 9 DUI”s, one of which was a DUI collision. Additionally, there was one arrest for drunk in public. These are relatively low numbers, according to Dye.

While there were no check points, during maximum enforcement, the CHP typically sends additional officers out to look for drivers they suspect may be under the influence. The CHP also relies on good samaritans to call in and report reckless drivers. Things to look for are irregular speed and weaving.

According to Dye, a DUI can cost an offender anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000. Dye said to be particularly wary on the road during inclement weather. “It”s especially dangerous this time of year because there are two hazards to look out for, drunk drivers and the weather. We want people to slow down,” said Dye.
