UPDATED:

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Robert Logan Hyde. He was born May 21, 1936 in Wichita Falls, Texas and was a resident of Kelseyville for the past 16 years, our beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, uncle and friend passed away at home in the early morning of Dec. 18, 2006.

The middle child and only son of Dr. Theodore Lincoln and Thelma Logan Hyde, he was raised in The Dalles, Ore., where he attended school from kindergarten through graduation from The Dalles High School. A brilliant young man with a tender heart and loving spirit who used to play sports, ride his horse and loved his St. Bernard, Kazan. Bob or “Hydo” as they fondly referred to him at his fraternity, the Kappa Alpha house at Stanford at which he was the fraternity president, received a B.S. from Stanford University and a Doctorate of Medicine in 1962 from McGill University in Montreal, Canada.

Dr. Hyde was a general practitioner for 44 years, who never retired. He began his private practice as a physician and surgeon in Florence, Ariz., and had the joy of delivering over 2500 babies spanning two generations. During this time he also ran the State Prison Hospital and Plasma Center and provided care for the inmates there without judgement or fear. In 1995, Dr. Hyde relocated to Kelseyville and was the Doctor for two clinics in the area and at the present was caring for his patients at Meadowood Nursing Center in Clearlake.

Bob had an adventerous spirit and loved white water rafting, skiing, traveling and exploring the world with his loved ones. He never went anywhere without his (disposable) camera and took great joy in chronicling his life”s journey through the lens. Most of all he loved piloting his Cessna 210 and used to say he”d “rather fly than eat.”

A lifelong athlete, Bob holds a high school track record in the 440 yard dash and completed 64 marathons and a few ultra marathons.

A man of great resolve, dignity and pride, full of personal goals and major accomplishments. He loved living life and getting to know the people in his life, you never had to tell Bob your name twice, and he never forgot a face.

He was a renaissance man, filled with great wisdom, a teacher to his children and a man of great intellect, interests and musical talents. Later in his life he enjoyed the challenge of crossword puzzles, he never found one that he couldn”t solve.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Hyde; children, Amy Hyde Sherman, Rebecca Joann Hyde, both of Mill Valley, Casey Hyde, Brennan Hyde both of Florence, Ariz.; sisters, Nancy Hyde Anderson of San Francisco and Sally Hyde Thomas of Charlottesville, Va.; and two beautiful grandsons, Maxwell Hyde Sherman and newborn Jorge A. Logan Flores, both of Mill Valley; and former wife, Joann Lohr Reedy.

Though the end of his life was filled with great pain and suffering he never complained. Bob was a positive person, with a kind smile and a man who lived his life, his way on his terms all the way to the end, and will always be greatly respected by us for that. He left behind many good friends and family who love him, but though he is gone he will always live on in our hearts, memories and live on through our children.

May you rest in peace our sweet husband, father and friend.

A celebration of his spectaular life will be held at a later date after the holidays.

Memorial gifts, in lieu of flowers, may be sent to: The Dalles High School Hyde Family Scholarship Fund (to benefit students pursuing health-related professions), 210 East 10th Street, The Dalles, OR 97058 or the charity of your choice.
