Peggy Smith and Bob Malley were gracious in their departures from the Clearlake City Council. Both were commended for multiple years of service as they spent their final night seated among the council, Thursday, Dec. 14.
Smith and Malley each accepted tokens of appreciation commending their service as council members. Both extended their gratitude for having had the opportunity to serve.
In considering the difficulty of her mobility, Mayor Joyce Overton presented Smith with her gifts while seated among the panel. Along with a plaque, which is traditionally given by the Clearlake City Council on such occasions, Smith received a gift recognizing her for courage, perseverance and strength. Crafted as a wall hanging, the gift framed words spoken to Smith last year by then mayor Judy Thein.
“She had a rough time but she stuck with it,” Overton cited.
Smith has struggled with her health during her four years on the council. Despite her health issues, Smith has managed to maintain her seat where she served as representative of the people. Although she limited her words to “thank you” after the presentation, Smith did extend her gratitude during her report to the council. “I don”t really have anything to report, but like Bob (Malley) tonight”s my last night up here and in a lot of ways I”m going to miss it very much.” Smith continued, “But, most of all what I want to say is I want to thank the citizens of this community for all the trust they”ve had in for the past four years. I hope that I”ve done at least part of what you had liked me to have done when you elected me. It”s a sad thing leaving but it is time for somebody else to take over and do a good job for you.”
Malley received his commendations from the podium where he thanked the council and the public. “It”s been a real fun ride ? up and down, up and down, up and down,” Malley said.
Malley was recognized for eight years of service to the community, three of which he had served as mayor and one year as vice mayor. Malley was first elected in November 1998 and gained reelection in 2002. He ended his representation with thanks for his supporters and critics.
“To the supporters that have made my job easier ? thank you; and to the other who made my job all that much tougher ? thank you to you as well because without your input we wouldn”t get both sides of the story.
“Thank you for allowing me to be your mayor for three terms and I enjoyed the eight years that I had. Thank you,” Malley concluded.
Smith and Malley also received plaques from Clearlake Police Bob Chalk, who also accepted retirement commemorations during the course of the night. Chalk commended both outgoing council members for their dedication and service to the city as well as support for the police department.
Chuck Leonard and Roy Simons were sworn into Smith”s and Malley”s seats on the council.
