LAKE COUNTY — This year, instead of letting newspapers pile up in the driveway while away at Grandma”s house, you can donate these extra copies to local classrooms.
“Newspapers in Education,” a little-known program within the Lake County Record-Bee, distributes papers for educational purposes to classrooms in Lake County who request to be a part of the program.
Hank Smith, kindergarten teacher at Upper Lake Elementary, said that younger classes don”t usually partake in the program. “However, my classes are very advanced kindergarteners; we read the financial section,” Smith joked.
Smith says he has heard of the program, however, and his family has donated papers when they are on vacation, something the Record-Bee gives those with a subscription the option of doing. The newspaper involved in the program locally is the Lake County Record-Bee. Lake County residents can also donate their Press Democrat papers to classes in Sonoma County, a separate program run by the Press Democrat. Additionally, a resident can donate a subscription to a classroom, either on a temporary basis, or a classroom can take over the remainder of a subscription when a customer no longer needs the paper, for example, when a subscriber moves out of town.
If you are going away on holiday this winter or spring, and want your paper donated to a classroom, or would like to give a subscription as a gift, call the Lake County Record-Bee at 263-5636 for more information.
