MIDDLETOWN — At Middletown, Kory Hook scored sank two baskets in the final minutes of the second overtime period to boost his team to victory as the Clear Lake High Cardinals defeated the Middletown Mustangs 59-56 in a game that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
Middletown lead the first quarter 16-6 only to be outscored 16-9 in the second period and managed to hold a narrow three-point margin at halftime. The Mustangs increased the lead to five points at the end of the third period but again the Cardinals rallied to tie the game 47-all at the end of regulation.
The two teams managed only four points each in the first overtime period and the Cardinals led by one point until Hook scored twice in the waning seconds.
Middletown coach Mike Mullins chalked the loss up to poor shooting on the part of his team and gave credit to a strong performance by the Cardinals. Mullins said his team hit only 19 of 66 field goal attempts.
This was the second consecutive overtime loss for the Mustangs, losing to Cloverdale Friday in overtime.
Clear Lake”s Freddy Olloqui lead all scorers with 19 points and Hook contributed 13 to round out scorers in double figures. Jake Strickler, with 15 led the Mustangs in scoring with Brandon Breeden, Tyler Hunt and Andrew Djernes each adding 10 points.
n Kelseyville 69, Upper Lake 44
At Upper Lake, the Kelseyville Knights captured their first win of the season Tuesday as they rode past the Upper Lake Cougars 69-44.
Kelseyville”s Joe Gatlyn exploded in the second quarter racking up 13 points in the period. He hit all five of his field goal attempts and went three for four from the freethrow line in the second quarter. Gatlyn went on to lead all scorers with 17 points.
Also scoring in double figures for the Knights were Sam Tannous with 12 and Isaac McQueen and West Stevensen each with 11.
Jacob Widener was the only Cougar scoring in double figures with 10.
n Cloverdale 57, Lower Lake 33
At Cloverdale, The Lower Lake Trojans dressed only seven players and were missing two starters when they took to the floor in Cloverdale Tuesday. The absence of those starters was noticed as the Trojans fell to Cloverdale 57-33.
Trojan coach Marty Udy said the players were absent “for various reasons,” he said. “We just didn”t do any one thing very well tonight.”
Jeff Wilder was the only Trojan marking double figures with 14 points.
Girls” basketball
At Kelseyville, the Kelseyville Lady Knights use a half-court press and a fast-break-oriented offense to dominate the first two quarters of play in Tuesday”s 66-23 victory over Upper Lake.
“We moved the ball well,” Knights coach Jim Salmina said, noting the team racked up a total of 22 assists.
The Lady Knights” half-court press held the Lady Cougars scoreless in the first quarter while the Knights posted 23 points. Upper Lake managed only four points in the second period and trailed 41-4 at the half.
Senior center Lauren Nixon led the Knights in scoring with 15 points. Other Knights scoring in double figures were Jill Bailey and Judi Snider with 12 each and Amanda Mueller with 11.
Caity Falge was the top scorer for the Lady Cougars, posting 6 points.
The victory was the second consecutive win for the Lady Knights. Saturday they defeated Hoopa 47-35 to claim third place in the Stokes Tournament.
Kelseyville also won the junior varsity contest, 49-37.
The Knights travel to Cloverdale Friday night.
n Clear Lake 61, Middletown 26
At Clear Lake, Sophomore guard Kaila Sterbank sank three 3-pointers and racked up 17 total points to lead the Clear Lake High School Cardinals to a 61-26 drubbing of the Middletown Mustangs. Senior Brittany Rumfelt added 16 for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals received strong all-around efforts from senior Molly Ryan, who posted 10 points, 17 rebounds, a block and a steal and from Rumfelt who added 11 rebounds and four steals to her 16 points.
“It was our goal to get going early,” said Cardinal Coach Jennifer Goff. And that they did, leading 17-2 at the first buzzer and 34-11 at halftime.
The victory boosts the Cardinals” record to 8-4. They host Fort Bragg on Friday.
n Lower Lake 53, Cloverdale 45
At Lower Lake, the Lower Lake Lady Trojans outscored Cloverdale 14-9 in the third quarter to end what was a back-and-forth battle and go on to claim a 53-45 victory Tuesday.
Cloverdale led by two at the end of the first quarter and Lower Lake led by two at the half.
Junior guard Rissy Prude was a dominating factor throughout the game, tallying 18 points, six assists and a steal. Junior guard Passion Allen-LeNard scored 13 points and had 10 rebounds to round out the players scoring in double figures.
Sarah Hernandez led Cloverdale in scoring with 16 points.
In JV action Cloverdale defeated the Trojans 34-32. Darlene White led the Trojan effort with 17 points.
Friday, the Trojans travel to Petaluma to take on St. Vincent.
